We invite submissions for our annual short story competition, The Short Story is Dead, Long Live the Short Story! We are open for submissions from May 4, 2018 to June 130, 2018.

Religion in Africa provides a wide range of listening and viewing strategies which can be invoked in different situations to make new meaning of the unfamiliar or preternatural. As one of the most persistent forces that drive our daily urges — from a prophet repeatedly conjuring up sorcery at the prosperity church down the road, to soccer players bending down to touch the ground before the start of a soccer match — religion binds the living to the spiritual through an intricate system of accepted ethics, superstitions, worldviews, sanctified places and customs.

For the fourth volume of our annual story competition – The Short Story is Dead, Long Live the Short Story! – we are calling for stories that work with, within and against organized, as well as shunned, religions.

While we will allow for viewpoints that grapple with the malleable, disorienting nature of religious belief, we particularly encourage writing that stretches our definition of what is religion and provides new perspectives on its forms and place in contemporary Africa.
